The Wicklow Branch of the Irish Draught Horse Breeders Association held their annual show in the wonderful facilities of Boswell Equestrian on Sunday July 22nd. Entries were up on last year and in particular the ridden classes where owners and riders were anxious to get outings for their horses before the Dublin Horse Show. With so many agricultural shows cancelled throughout the country, it has reduced the opportunities for show hunters to compete in classes.
The committee invited 3 overseas judges to attend and these were Vicky Mathews, Mark Fitton and junior judge Jan Hunt.
The brood mares and foals were judged by Mark Fitton and Jan Hunt and they chose Liam Lynskey’s barren mare “Lady in Red” a 14 yr old by Grosvenor Lad as their mare champion with the brood mare “Liskillen Harmony” owned by Aiden Travers in reserve.
The Bloomfield House sponsored championship went to local exhibitors Stephen and Adrienne Kealy with their colt foal “Gentleman Jack” by Gentle Diamond with Aiden Travers filly foal “Pagestown Harmony” ( Crosstown Dancer) standing in reserve.
Vicky Mathews along with Jan Hunt judged the youngstock classes and although some of the classes were poorly supported the youngstock exhibited were of a very high standard.
The FBD youngstock champion and the Kevin Lawlor Trophy went to Wexford exhibitors Ger and Sadie Murphy with their 3 yr old filly “Lilly B” a chestnut by Gurruan Zidane x Mrs Buck. Reserve champion was Michael Byrnes grey 3 yr old gelding by Rosheen Yeats.
The ridden classes were very well filled with as many as 20 in the working hunters. Well known dressage rider Debbie Tems was the ridden judge while Ger O’Sullivan judged confirmation. Debbie had a lovely selection of horses to ride and again large entries due to there being so few classes before the Horse Show.
Ridden champion was Fintan Flannelly’s 4 yr old gelding “Shining Star” bred locally in Ashford by Reg Armstrong. By Montpelier Seaview x Forest Lodge Heather this grey gelding was a lovely horse and no doubt would give some hope to breeders that their colt foals can grow up to produce such lovely riding horses. Reserve was the ridden cob “The Forger” by Huntingfield Rebel owned and ridden by Imelda O’Shaughnessy.
The Wicklow Branch sponsored supreme championship and the Rosheen yeats trophy went to ridden champion “Shining Star” while the cob “The Forger” stood reserve. The brood mare “Lady in Red” was second reserve.
The committee would like to thank all sponsors, supporters and helpers on the day.
